The patient who died on Monday suddenly recovered on Tuesday. But it wasn't a miracle. First, there was the experience, talent and determination of fantastic doctors from the hospital of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration in Warsaw. They started by cooling a part of the heart to -180 degrees Celsius, and then performed cardioneuroablation.
Stanisław Woźniak, who came to Warsaw from Podkarpacie. The patient's condition was so bad that he did not come here but was brought from Podkarpacie. His heart was shaken by an electrical storm, the constant discharges disturbed the heart muscle. Every now and then the cardioverter-defibrillator had to turn on to bring the patient back to life. It was a nightmare.
Finally, doctors had to connect him to ECMO, i.e. an artificial heart and lung. Electrophysiologists quickly prepared an electrical map of the heart, and cardiac surgeons immediately began the operation.
“He was practically dying.”
First, they froze a piece of the heart that was raging with discharges. At the peak, the temperature of the freezing probe, white with frost, was -180 degrees Celsius.
– A patient who was practically in this dying state all the time. During the second application of this device, it lasted several dozen seconds, suddenly sinus rhythm, i.e. the normal heart rhythm, appeared and everyone in the room breathed a sigh of relief – reports Prof. Piotr Suwalski, director of the State Medical Institute of the Ministry of Interior and Administration in Warsaw.
Then, Mr. Stanisław's calmed heart was partially denervated – it's called cardioneuroablation – so that it no longer electrically surged and developed an arrhythmia.
– It will be less sensitive to external stimulation – says prof. Mariusz Kowalewski, deputy director for scientific affairs at the State Medical Institute of the Ministry of Interior and Administration in Warsaw.
The effect was that the patient who died on October 14 suddenly recovered the next day.
An unprecedented operation
– It's okay now. The person is sore, but it's good, says Stanisław Woźniak.

Doctors from the State Medical Institute of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration are proud of this procedure because they saved the patient by combining two methods: freezing – they did it through a small five-centimeter hole in the chest, and denervation – a method known in medicine, but not in cardiac surgery.
– What's new is the survey. What's new is that we did it in ventricular arrhythmias. What's new is that it is an application from the outside of the ventricular muscle and that it is constantly on the beating heart – says Prof. Mariusz Kowalewski.
In a word, in this misfortune of being ill, Mr. Stanisław was very lucky to be in good hands.
