The last stage of work at the Warszawa Zachodnia station will last until the end of August. A special machine is grinding the new tracks. After this treatment, trains will run more quietly.
Work is underway at the Western Railway Station. One of the elements of the modernization of the Warszawa Zachodnia station was the replacement of 31 kilometers of tracks. “The last stage of track work is grinding the rails, which is to ensure a quieter passage of trains through an important station in the capital. This process has been ongoing since mid-July and takes place at night, which minimizes the impact of the works on train traffic,” explains Karol Jakubowski, spokesman for PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe, in a press release. The work on grinding the rails will last until the end of August.
The work is carried out using a special Speno train. “It is a machine weighing about 270 tons and about 80 meters long, which examines the surface of the rails and then grinds it with special abrasive stones to shape the rail and remove any defects. The pressure and working angle are determined with an accuracy of tenths of a millimeter,” describes Jakubowski.
So far, work has been carried out on 11 kilometres of track, out of the planned 31 kilometres.
An investment worth two billion zlotys
The modernization of Warszawa Zachodnia is one of the largest investments by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe SA in the country.
“All platforms are already covered. Escalators, elevators, a dynamic information system and wide passages will facilitate access to trains. It will be easier to combine train travel with public transport. Safe management of rail traffic will be ensured by modern devices and computer systems,” Jakubowski enumerates.
The project “Works on the Warsaw cross-city line on the Warsaw East – Warsaw West section” is worth approximately PLN 2 billion net. It is co-financed by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund under the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme.
