The temporary roundabout that was built on Chodecka Street will remain permanent. Before that, it will be rebuilt and the last section of the street will be renovated. The plan is to designate new parking spaces and plant trees. The project has already been completed and a contractor has been selected. The works on Chodecka Street will cost PLN 10.5 million.

Chodecka Street has undergone a metamorphosis along almost its entire length, from Krasnobrodzka to Wyszogrodzka. The “dot on the i” is missing, i.e. the renovation of the last few hundred meters of the road and the construction of the final roundabout at the intersection with Matki Teresa z Kolkata Street. This will change soon.

It was dangerous

The safety audit conducted at the intersection of Chodecka and Mother Teresa of Kolkata in 2017 left no doubts. “This place was extremely dangerous – especially for pedestrians – three crossings within the intersection received scores of 0.2 and 2. It was a good thing that the Warsaw Metro was building further stations of the second line in the area. As part of the temporary traffic organization, a temporary roundabout was built here and with with it, widened shelters at crossings, as requested by the auditors,” recalled the Municipal Roads Authority.

As he emphasized, the introduction of circular traffic has proven successful, but there are no longer detours through Chodecka Street, so the final roundabout will have a smaller cross-section. “Thanks to this, pedestrians will have one lane to cross, instead of two as before,” they noted.

Roundabout, parking lot and greenery

Road engineers decided to make the temporary roundabout permanent. Last year, the tender for the project was concluded and it is now ready.

It assumes that the geometry of the Chodecka Street inlet will change on the section from the roundabout to Żuromińska. Drivers will also benefit. There will be more parallel parking spaces on the Chodecka road, and a row of trees will appear on its western side.

“As part of the project, we also want to renovate the last, untouched section of Chodecka Street – from Wyszogrodzka to Balkonowa. In addition to renovating the road and sidewalks, we will also rebuild the pedestrian crossing at Żuromińska. In the safety audit, it received a low rating – 1” – noted ZDM.

He assured that after all the work is completed, residents will have a comfortable, functional and safe Chodecka street at their disposal – along its entire length.

Contractor selected

During the August session of the City Council, the Municipal Roads Authority received PLN 7 million for the construction of a new roundabout. “Thanks to this, after receiving the project, we will be able to start preparations for announcing a tender for the implementation of works in the field. We want them to start in 2025,” the road engineers noted.

At the beginning of October, ZDM announced a tender aimed at selecting a contractor for the work. As many as 12 companies were interested in the reconstruction of Chodecka Street and the construction of a roundabout at the intersection with Matki Teresa z Kolkaty Street.

“Many of the submitted offers were below the previously prepared cost estimate. Ultimately, we chose the offer from Krol, worth less than PLN 10.5 million,” informed the Municipal Roads Authority.

PLN 284 million to improve road traffic safety

As the road engineers assured, the construction of the roundabout at the intersection of Chodecka and Matki Teresa z Kolkata is part of a long-term program to improve road traffic safety, the basis of which is a comprehensive audit of pedestrian crossings. At the same time, in the years 2025-2028, Warsaw will allocate PLN 284 million for activities related to improving road traffic safety.
