Adam Glapiński referred to the amount of his earnings at the press conference on Thursday. – My net salary, what goes to the account, is about PLN 600,000 a year – said the president of the National Bank of Poland. He added that his earnings are clearly lower than in other European central banks.
Adam Glapiński as president of the National Bank of Poland grossed over PLN 1.3 million in 2022 – results from the information published on the website of the central bank. This is an 18 percent increase over the previous year.
Earnings of the head of the NBP
At the conference, the head of the NBP presented data showing that the president of the central bank earns the most, as he traditionally emphasized Switzerland – more than 1 million euros. The next places in terms of earnings expressed in euro were occupied by the governors of central banks: Denmark – over 600,000, GermanItaly and the ECB – within 0.5 million, and then FranceAustria, Sweden – less than 400,000, and finally Poland – with approx. 300,000. euro.
– The Polish custom is that the gross salary is given, but my net salary, what goes to the account, is about PLN 600,000 a year – said Glapiński.
He also presented data showing that the gross remuneration of the president of the Polish central bank is 3-4 times lower than that of the presidents of commercial banks operating in Poland. Including those controlled by the state, he stressed.
– My remuneration is still over a dozen percent of the average remuneration of the six largest banks in Poland. And I don’t have to say what is the scale of NBP, and what is the scale of some of our banks, of which the largest bank in Poland is more or less an average German bank. But the salary there is four or six times higher than that of the president of the NBP – said Glapiński.
– The President of the NBP and the National Bank of Poland are not part of the administration. We don’t live off the budget, we finance ourselves. During my term of office, we transferred about PLN 35 billion to the budget for citizens. Also, let politicians stop getting excited about the remuneration of board members and the president of the National Bank of Poland. This is regulated by the laws that they themselves pushed through in the Sejm. And they are published. And there are no additional bonuses, shares, shares – he added.
Tusk on Glapiński’s earnings
On Monday, the leader of the Civic Platform, Donald Tusk he spoke about the remuneration of the heads of the central banks of Poland and the USA – Adam Glapiński and the head of the Fed Jerome Powell.
– The remuneration of Mr. Glapiński this year has increased exactly as much as inflation – by 18 percent (in February 18.4 percent according to the Central Statistical Office – ed.). And I found out at the end (…) that the earnings of Mr. Glapiński are clearly higher than the earnings of his counterpart in the United States (Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell – ed.) – said Tusk.
He added that “Chairman Adam Glapiński is perhaps the most expensive president in the world when it comes to central banks.” – Of course, the chairman of the Federal Reserve can laugh about it, but in Poland nobody is laughing – he said.
