As many as 14,000 people in the north-west of Ecuador were affected by extensive flooding over the weekend. The rain caused several rivers to flood.
Residents of northwestern Ecuador faced downpours all weekend. The rainfall was so heavy that it flooded six rivers. The consequences of flooding and flooding seriously affected over 14,000 people.
Lots of destruction
Drone footage shows how extensive the damage has been in the province of Esmeraldas. Residents have already begun assessing the damage, as well as clearing up masses of mud and debris. So far, it has been confirmed that nearly 400 homes have been damaged, as well as seven educational institutions. Parts of some roads have been destroyed.
The regional authorities are doing everything possible to support the victims. Seven temporary shelters have been opened, and the residents have also received humanitarian aid.
However, the weather forecasts are not optimistic. According to the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, it will also rain for the next few days. The rain is said to have “varying intensity”, meaning the situation could still be dangerous.
