Maciej Sokołowski, correspondent of TVN24 and TVN24 BIS in Brussels and Beata Płomecka, a correspondent of Polish Radio, discussed in the subcrace of the “summit of Europe” about the reaction of the European Union to duties applied by the US on foreign steel and aluminum. It is about imposing retaliation duties to USA goods worth EUR 26 billion.

In the first place, the EC will hang the customs from the time of the first presidency Donald Trump – including American alcohol, Harley-Davidson motorcycles and jeans produced mainly in the republicans or key states. Then he will apply new tariffs, for example on beef and sugar.

The EU duties will come into force on April 1, will be fully implemented from April 13.

“It even shocked me”

Sokołowski admitted, the exchange of blows in the customs war is getting “really interesting”. – It even shocked me, listening and talking to the officials in the Commission (European – ed.), That they thoroughly took into account the products they want to hit – “yes, we do not hide it, we hit the products of the Red States, i.e. those who voted for Donald Trump and those from which republican senators come, so that they would feel” – indicated the correspondent in Brussels.

– And they exchange – in Alabama (customs – ed.) For wood, in Louisiana – on soy – he continued.

Beata Płomecka pointed out that Louisiana is a state from which the announcer of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson comes from. The journalist added that the duties also include meat from Nebraska and Kansas. “These are exactly selected states to hit republican voters,” she added.

– It wasn't a message for us, let's not hide. It was a message sent straight to Washington: “We aim at the red states, we aim at the specific names of the senators.” This is something that hasn't been so far. This is the transition to Donald Trump, to the level of discussion with Donald Trump: “If you treat us like that, see what we can do” – explained Maciej Sokołowski.
