Lightning strikes kill about 28 Americans each year. On Thursday, 16-year-old Baylee Holbrook lost her life because of this. Two days earlier, the girl was hunting with her father, during which a storm broke out.

One person died as a result, according to information released Thursday by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office stormwhich passed over Florida on Tuesday.

They lost consciousness

Matthew Holbrook and his daughter Baylee were hunting near Palatka on Tuesday. They were in a wooded area when a storm broke out. At one point, into the tree under which they were sitting, lightning struck. According to the man, they both lost consciousness. When Matthew woke up, he saw that his daughter was not breathing.

According to the report, the man took the child into the car and drove to the main road. There he called the emergency services.

The teenager managed to revive herself and was transported to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, on Thursday her condition worsened again. The sheriff’s office said Baylee died surrounded by her immediate family.

– She had a unique gift for making people smile. She was and will continue to be a light to all of us,” said Rick Surrency, Putnam County probation officer and friend of the Holbrook family.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 28 people die from lightning in the U.S. each year. The most cases are reported in the states of Florida, Texas, Colorado, North Carolina and Alabama.
