Doctors are very pleased with the progress made and remain optimistic about King Charles' recovery after he was diagnosed with cancer in February this year. Thanks to his improved health, he will return to public appearances, Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

“His Majesty's treatment program will continue, but as doctors are satisfied with the progress, the King will be able to return to some of his public duties,” said a Buckingham Palace spokesman.

It is not known at this stage how long treatment will last, a spokesman said, but doctors “were very pleased with the progress made and remain optimistic about the King's recovery.” No further details about the monarch's health were provided due to medical confidentiality.

“As the anniversary of the coronation approaches, the royal couple remains eternally grateful for the support they have received from around the world during the hardships and joys of the past year,” Buckingham Palace said.

On Friday, the Palace also confirmed the visit to the UK by Japanese Emperor Naruhito and his wife at the end of June. King Charles will not work according to the usual summer calendar, and his plans will be determined in consultation with doctors, the spokesman clarified.

Health problems in the royal family

The king's absence coincided with information about the poor health of his daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales. She was also diagnosed with cancer – during tests before the surgery she was to undergo. Duchess Kate underwent preventive chemotherapy. She has not recovered yet.
