British police are investigating the mysterious death of a 14-year-old refugee from Ukraine. On Saturday, March 4, officers from Devon received a report that she was missing. In the evening of the same day, they found her unconscious on the beach in Dawlish, the BBC reports. The girl was transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital, where she died shortly thereafter.
According to “The Telegraph”, last year the girl left the war-torn area with her mother Ukraine. Settled in Dawlish, where the teenager attended the local high school. “They came here to find safety, and now they have to come to terms with such a terrible tragedy. It’s terribly sad,” said Lisa Mayne, mayor of Dawlish, speaking of the situation of the local Ukrainian community.
The events of Saturday were reported in the British media by Inspector Becky Davies. As she explained, the search for the teenager was carried out with the support of a police helicopter and the coast guard. A person was found unconscious on Dawlish beach and airlifted to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital where he died. – Death (14-year-olds – ed.) is currently treated as unexplained. Her circumstances are being investigated, she added.

As announced by local services, an autopsy is to be carried out on Thursday, March 9. Currently, officers are securing recordings from security cameras mounted on buildings located in the beach area. Investigators hope that these actions will help determine the circumstances of the young refugee’s death. The Ukrainian embassy and the Home Office – the department of the British government responsible for immigration policy and public order – have already been informed about the tragedy.

– It’s absolutely devastating. It is impossible to properly put into words how (this death – ed.) will affect our Ukrainian community – said Mayor Dawlish, quoted by “The Telegraph”. “The family needs time to grieve, but they also need to know what happened,” she added. “It just breaks my heart, I can’t imagine what her family must be going through,” said the mother of a student at Dawlish College, where the 14-year-old attended.
