“In response to the attacks on Israel carried out for months by Iran and its allies, the Israel Defense Forces launched precision attacks on military targets in Iran on the night from Friday to Saturday,” announced the spokesman for the Israeli armed forces, Kadm. Daniel Hagari. Iranian media reported explosions heard in the Iranian capital and Tehran, and the nearby city of Karaj. They also announced that the traffic of civilian aircraft at all airports in the country had been suspended.

Iranian state television reported that several strong explosions were heard in the capital, but there was no official comment on the source of the explosion. The Fars news agency, run by Iran's Revolutionary Guard, reported that Israel attacked several military bases in the west and southwest of Tehran. In turn, the Tasnim news agency reported that the targets of the attacks included bases of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

A spokesman for Iran's Civil Aviation Organization said flights on all routes had been canceled until further notice, Iran's state news agency IRNA reported on Saturday.

At the same time, Syrian state media reported explosions near Damascus and Homs. Israel attacked some military facilities in central and southern Syria, SANA news agency reported. Syrian air defense forces intercepted missiles fired by Israel “from the direction of the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights and Lebanese territories” and shot down some of them, the Syrian state agency added.

Israel did not carry out attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities or oil fields, it focused on military targets, Reuters reported, citing an Israeli official according to NBC News and ABC News. “We are attacking targets that have posed a threat to us in the past or may pose a threat to us in the future,” the station's source noted.

“Israel has the right and obligation to respond”

On October 1, Iran fired approximately 200 rockets at Israel declaring that it was retaliation for the killing of the leaders of Tehran-backed movements – Palestinian Hamas and Lebanese Hezbollah. Most of the Iranian missiles were shot down; one person died. The military later reported that some missiles hit military bases but did not cause significant damage.

Israel announced a firm response. “Like any sovereign state, Israel has the right and obligation to respond,” Hagari emphasized in a message announcing the night's attack, and noted that his country has been continuously attacked by Iran and its allies since October 7, 2023 “on seven fronts.” Iran has previously warned it would respond to Israeli retaliation.

“The Iranian regime and its allies in the region have been continuously attacking Israel since October 7, 2023 on seven fronts, including through direct attacks from Iranian territory, (…) like any sovereign state, Israel has the right and obligation to respond ” – Hagari said in a message published on social media.

There are already announcements of retaliation for the Israeli attack. Iran is prepared to respond to any Israeli “aggression”, the Iranian news agency Tasnim reported on Saturday, citing sources. “There is no doubt that Israel will face a proportionate response to any actions it takes,” it added.

“The US was warned by Israel about the attack on Iran”

– The United States is not participating in the Israeli attack on Iran, the attack is self-defense and a response to that country's raid on Israel on October 1, said Sean Savett, spokesman for the US National Security Council, on the night from Friday to Saturday, as quoted by CNN.

“We understand that Israel is conducting targeted strikes against Iran's military targets, exercising its right of self-defense and responding to Iran's ballistic missile attack on October 1,” Savett said. The US was warned by Israel about the attack on Iran, Reuters reported, citing an anonymous US government official.

The White House said that Vice President Kamala Harris had been notified about the Israeli attack and was being kept informed about the developments.

US President Joe Biden, not wanting to cause even greater tension in the Middle East, previously warned Israel not to attack Iran's nuclear facilities and mining industry.

Attack and retaliation

Iran directly attacked Israel earlier, in April this year. In the first direct attack on this country in history, Tehran fired a salvo of several hundred rockets and drones. Most of them were shot down by Israeli air defense and troops stationed in the region, including: USA, Great Britain and France. The Iranian strike was in response to an Israeli attack on Damascus that killed several senior Iranian Revolutionary Guard commanders. Israel responded to the attack by destroying several military targets in Iran a few days later.

Iran is perceived by Israel as the main enemy in the region, which surrounds the Jewish state with a network of militias it supports, belonging to the so-called the axis of evil or the axis of terror, which Tehran presents as the “axis of resistance”. This informal coalition includes, among others: Palestinian Hamas, which attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, which started the war in the Gaza Strip that continues to this day. The strongest organization supported by Iran is the Lebanese Hezbollah, which has been attacking Israel for over a year. For over a month, Israel has been conducting an intensive campaign against Hezbollah, including a ground operation in southern Lebanon.
