Police are investigating the felling of one of the most famous trees in Great Britain, the BBC reported on Thursday. The tree appeared in the 1991 film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”. Andrew Poad of the British National Trust, which deals with the protection of monuments and nature, said that the famous sycamore tree has been “an important and characteristic element of the landscape for almost 200 years.”

Sycamore grew in northeastern England in a place known as Sycamore Gap next to Hadrian’s Wall, a Roman-era wall. He was beheaded on the night from Wednesday to Thursday. The photos show a tree trunk sticking out of the ground and the rest of the tree lying on the wall.

“We confirm that the famous tree at Sycamore Gap was felled overnight. We have reason to believe that it was deliberately felled,” reads a statement from the Northumberland National Park Authority on social media.

Robin Hood tree

It was called the “Robin Hood tree” after it appeared in the 1991 film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”, starring Kevin Costner. In 2016 it became the English Tree of the Year.

Growing in a natural depression and a vast treeless area, it was photographed by tourists from all over the world. Andrew Poad, director general of the National Trust – a British organization dealing with the protection of monuments and nature – emphasized that the sycamore tree has been “an important and characteristic element of the landscape for almost 200 years.”

“Shock, sadness and anger”

“I cannot express how angry I am at this act of vandalism,” North of Tyne Mayor Jamie Driscoll, who visited the scene, wrote on social media. “This is part of our collective soul. We must bring to justice whoever did this,” he added.

Local police are conducting an investigation to determine whether a crime has occurred in connection with the felling of the tree, the BBC reported.

“This is a world-famous landmark and this event has caused shock, sadness and anger throughout the local community and beyond,” said Kevin Waring of Northumberland Police.
