– Last week, the dog of a woman walking in the forest fell into a snare. The dog was running loose, which is, of course, prohibited in the national park. The owner freed the animal, then started looking around and found several snares nearby, 11 in total. The woman called the park guard. The guards thoroughly explored the area and came across more animals. The snares were deactivated so that no animals were harmed. We started observing this place – described Grzegorz Kondracki in an interview with tvnwarszawa.pl.

Caught red-handed

Last Saturday, guards noticed a man “tampering with snares left behind.” – It turned out that the man seen at the scene had activated a trap. Then we were sure it was a poacher, said Kondracki.

The guards disarmed the snares again and waited for the man to arrive again. – He returned yesterday (Wednesday – editor) between 3 and 4 p.m. He was caught red-handed. We handed him over to the police. Preparatory proceedings in this case are being conducted by the police station in Łomianki, said Kondracki.

Subinspector Ewelina Gromek-Oćwieja from the District Police Headquarters for the western Warsaw district confirmed the information about the detention of a man suspected of poaching. – Police activities involving the detainee are ongoing – a policewoman said on Thursday afternoon.

Snares set in the Kampinos National Park

Animals die from wounds or suffocation

Grzegorz Kondracki admitted that laying out snares in the Kampinos National Park or on its outskirts is not a mass phenomenon, but unfortunately such cases still happen. He recalled the story of a wolf that was killed by snares in February this year in the park's buffer zone, near the Vistula River. Then the guards found seven traps set by poachers.

Roe deer, elks, wild boars and wolves fall into traps made of metal ropes and wires. When trying to regain freedom, animals often injure themselves, cut themselves and tear their legs out of joints. They die strangled, injured, and sometimes torn apart by predators.

Under current law, poaching is punishable by up to five years in prison. The crime includes, among others: hunting outside the hunting district, hunting by people who do not belong to the Polish Hunting Association and do not have the required permits, killing protected animals or during the protection period, as well as using snares, snares, etc.
