Germany will once again deploy Patriot air defense systems in Poland. According to the German Press Agency DPA, the launchers are scheduled to arrive in Poland in January. The plan assumes temporary stationing of soldiers and systems in the Rzeszów area. Reconnaissance is scheduled to begin in the coming days.
German Patriots were already stationed in Poland from January to November last year. About 320 Bundeswehr soldiers operated three Patriot systems in the nearby Zamość area border with Ukraine.
This was a response to the events of November 2022, when a Ukrainian missile fighting Russian missiles mistakenly hit the village of Przewodzie in the Lublin region. Two people died then.
Southeastern Poland is of strategic importance
DPA reminds that Poland is one of the countries that very actively supports Ukraine, which is fighting against Russia, militarily and politically. It is also a very important logistics center for Western military aid to this country.
The airport in Rzeszów is of key importance, where American soldiers are also stationed, and the airport is protected by American Patriots. The broad-gauge railway line running from Zamość to Ukraine is also extremely important. It is used to transport heavy military equipment.
Rzeszów has been protected for a long time
According to DPA, plans to redeploy German Patriots are not a response to a direct change in the security situation. This is part of a broader and long-implemented strategy to better protect military installations.
Patriot systems belonging to the German Bundeswehr are among the most modern in the world. They are used to fight enemy planes, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles.
