I hope that Vladimir Putin will not be crazy enough to attack the entire North Atlantic Alliance, said the head of Polish diplomacy, RadosÅ‚aw Sikorski, on Friday. He added that “in order to effectively deter it, we must prepare.”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, RadosÅ‚aw Sikorski, was asked on Friday during a live broadcast on social media whether Poland was at risk of war with Russia. – This is one of the fundamental questions that only the potential aggressor, i.e. Vladimir Putin, knows the answer to – Sikorski replied.

According to him, we can do what we can, that is, deter him from the intentions he had and implemented towards Ukraine. Sikorski also drew attention to Putin's threats against Moldova and Latvia. – Thank God, this time Poland would not fight alone and does not have to deter him alone, as has happened many times in our history – noted the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

– Ukraine, and especially Poland, has the European Union and the United States behind it, I hope that Putin will not be crazy enough to attack the entire North Atlantic Alliance. But to effectively deter it, we must prepare, said the head of Polish diplomacy.

Sikorski: we must quickly rebuild the diplomatic and foreign services

Sikorski was also asked how he intended to rebuild the diplomatic and foreign services in Poland as quickly as possible. – There are things I can do myself, and there are other things that require statutory solutions. I have named many people in director positions, including heads of Polish institutes and consuls general. In matters of embassies – we'll see, I have already sent the first requests to President Andrzej Duda – said Sikorski.

According to him, the president “probably wants to defend PiS, non-diplomatic, political nominations, such as political refugees just before the elections of the last two years from the previous ruling party, so it probably won't be easy.” – But we will try to restore modernity, professionalism and apoliticality to the foreign service – said the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

An act that will “restore the necessary standards”

On Thursday, while presenting information on the assumptions and tasks of Polish foreign policy for 2024 to the Sejm, Sikorski announced that the Ministry of Diplomacy would present the results of work on the act that would “restore the necessary standards” of the Foreign Service by the end of the year. He assessed that under the previous government, “the radical questioning of the continuity of Polish foreign policy affected the condition of the Foreign Service, and the clerical and diplomatic staff became partisan on a scale unprecedented in the previous quarter of a century.”

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs then referred to the planned exchange of heads of Polish diplomatic missions. – Rotation in the diplomatic service is a natural process. The changes I propose are intended to cover several dozen ambassadors and permanent representatives. Most of them would be subject to rotation anyway, because they have been staying at the facilities for several years, Sikorski noted.

He announced that “some of these people will remain in the ministry.” – But the incompetent part, not knowing foreign languages, incompetently managing institutions and unable to represent the country with dignity – should never set foot in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs again – said the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Sejm.
