A large herd of bison grazing in a meadow, including young individuals – such a scene was captured in the KnyszyÅ„ska Forest. This forest complex is home to a large population of majestic mammals, one of the largest in the world. We received the recording of the animals on Kontakt24.
Although we associate bisons with the BiaÅ‚owieża National Park, in Poland these mammals live in eight free-living populations – outside the BiaÅ‚owieża Forest, we can meet them, among others: in western Poland, the Bieszczady Mountains, the Augustów Forest and the KnyszyÅ„ska Forest. It was in this last place that Reporter 24 managed to capture an exceptionally picturesque scene.
Extremely large population
We were contacted by an Internet user who sent us a video of bisons that he recorded on October 12. Mr. Antoni lives in Białystok and has been observing these animals for several years. The recording shows a large group of mammals, and the adults were accompanied by young ones.
– About every week I go to the Forest on weekends, and I come back during the week. I would say it is a hobby activity. You could call me a bison lover. I have been running my Facebook channel for five years. It's hard for me to say how it started, I think I saw bisons somewhere in the photos and remembered that they were near me. Then I went there, met them and it all started somehow, he commented.
– I'm going to the KnyszyÅ„ska Forest. Naturally, after a week at work, such a trip is a pleasure for me. Some people go fishing or mushroom picking, and I go to observe the bisons – he added.
As explained by foresters from the Krynki Forest District, which is part of the Knyszyńska Forest complex, there are over 100 bisons in their forests. There are only 21 such large herds of these mammals in the world, and most of the population consists of several dozen or so individuals.
