Today the conclave begins, which will choose the successor of Pope Francis. A record number of 133 electors, including four cardinals from Poland, will take part in it.

On Wednesday at 10 o'clock in the Basilica of Saint Peter, the Pro Eligendo Papa Mass will start, i.e. for the election of the Pope. At 16.30, the beginning of the Cardinal's Electors procession is planned to the Sistine Chapel, where they will take the oath.

With the closing of the door, the conclave will begin. Already on Wednesday, the first vote was foreseen.

Vatican On Tuesday evening, he published on the X platform “a few photos from two important rooms related to the selection of a new pope: the Sistine Chapel prepared for the conclave and 'chambers of tears', a small room next to the Sistine Chapel, where the pope first puts white liturgical robes.”

The outfit for the new pope is ready and will be waiting for him in the “Combation of Tears”. According to tradition, the outfit was sewn in three sizes: small, medium and large. The cassock was sewn by the 86-year-old tailor of Raniero Mancinelli, who has a small tailor workshop at a family shop on Borgo Pio Street just next to St. Peter Square. Master tailor's sewing has been costumes for clergy for 70 years.

Seven pairs of shoes in various sizes have also been prepared for the new pope, as well as a red mucet, i.e. a type of cape, which is part of the papal outfit.

Four cardinals from Poland among electors

The works of the conclave will be chaired by the current secretary of the state of the Holy See, Cardinal Pietro Parolin as the oldest cardinal-bishop in terms of nomination entitled to participate in the election of the pope.

A record number of 133 electors will take part in the selection of the new head of the Catholic Church, including four cardinals from Poland: Stanisław Ryłko, Kazimierz Nycz, Konrad Krajewski and Grzegorz Ryś.

Over the past 100 years, no conclave lasted more than five days. Ultimately, who appears on the balcony of the Basilica of Saint Peter as a new pope is usually a surprise.

Secret meeting

At the time of starting activities related to the selection, all electors must live in the House of Saint Marta. This year, due to their record number, additional rooms were also made in the neighboring building, a connected connector.

In accordance with the provisions of the Apostolic Constitution “Universi Dominici Gregis” John Paul II from 1996, the room of the House of Saint Marta, as well as in a special way of the Sistine Chapel and the place of the liturgical celebrations taking place, must be inaccessible to unauthorized persons.
