Since the end of the Olympic Games in Paris, there have been regular media “scuffles” between Sławomir Nitras (minister of sports) and Radosław Piesiewicz (president of the Polish Olympic Committee). One of the bones of contention between them is the amount of Piesiewicz's remuneration. Łukasz Jachimiak from Sport.pl reported that Piesiewicz earned on average about PLN 36,000. net PLN per month in 2024. Much higher amounts, at the level of 100-150 thousand. zlotys a month, said Nitras.
– This is a much larger amount than what Mr. Piesiewicz is talking about. We know that he had at least two contracts and that he reduced his salary immediately after last year's parliamentary elections. The crux of the matter is the transparency of the Polish Olympic Committee and Polish sports associations in general. I have nothing against State Treasury companies supporting the Polish Olympic Committee or unions, but it must be done under control, said Nitras on the Third Program of Polish Radio.
And this is not the only topic where Nitras has doubts about the work of the Polish Olympic Committee during Piesiewicz's rule.
Nitras reacts to rumors about a “party” in the Polish House. “Scandalous situations”
Sławomir Nitras gave an interview “Przegląd Sportowy Onet”in which he referred, among others, to to the activities of the Polish Olympic Committee during the government of Radosław Piesiewicz. The Minister of Sport referred to the news that a “multi-day party” was to take place at the Polish House during the games. – I haven't been to any party. I've heard a bit about this. From what I know, there were scandalous situations there and I also know that no one should behave like that. I won't repeat the rumors, but there is too much information to not believe it, he said.
– The most important thing is that this situation cannot happen again. This whole way of functioning, ostentatious spending of public money, apparently not only for sports purposes, will simply not happen again. I promised the presidents, but I can also promise the players. I can promise all athletes who will prepare, fight for qualifications and then compete at the Olympic Games that the situation that occurred at the Olympic Games in Paris will not happen again, added Nitras.
The Polish House cost Poland several million zlotys during the games. – There is nothing wrong with the Polish House itself during the games. In Paris it was perverted. If it serves activists, Mr. Piesiewicz's guests, Mr. Piesiewicz, and for such purposes, and it happens at the expense of athletes, then it is simply unacceptable. I will do everything to ensure that everyone who will represent us, whether an athlete, a physiotherapist or a coach, has the feeling that he will not lack anything – explains the Minister of Sport.
It turns out that from the beginning of 2025, Nitras will be able to check the full financial reports of sports associations that apply to the Ministry for a subsidy. Due to the lack of this provision, Nitras could not examine the Polish Olympic Committee after the games.
– I had no legal instruments to do anything. I didn't have it, but I found it. However, when it comes to the dismissal of President Piesiewicz, I have never appealed or requested it, because I have no such right. I respect the independence of the Polish Olympic Committee, but it seems to me that the activists of this institution know that it will not continue like this – concluded Nitras.
