A resident of the US state of Connecticut, who took a bag with money found in a parking lot, was arrested a few months later. He faces up to five years in prison and a heavy fine.

On May 30 of this year, an employee of the Trumbull City Hall tax office took a bag containing $5,000 in cash to a local bank to deposit the money. The police report quoted by NBC shows that at some point the man realized that the bag was missing.

About the same time, 56-year-old Robert Withington, who lives in Trumbull, appeared in front of the bank building. – I went out to the parking lot and saw something lying on the ground. There was no one around, so I picked it up, he explained in an interview with local publisher Hearst Connecticut Media. The “something” he was talking about was a bag full of money lost by a tax office employee.

Withington stressed that he decided to take the bag with him thinking “it was his lucky day.” – It’s not like I stole anything. Everything happened quickly. “I felt like I won the lottery,” the man said.

Trumbull. 56-year-old man charged with misappropriation

According to NBC, police documents show that the 56-year-old was convinced that he did not have to return the bag and money to the owner. – This situation is nonsense. I found money, which will probably cost me money now, said Withington, quoted by local publisher. – If I knew I was doing something wrong, I would have returned the bag immediately. I had no idea he was doing something wrong. Everyone who knows me knows that I am generous. I have lived here for 20 years and I am not looking for problems, he added.

He also emphasized that there were no elements or marks on the bag that would enable the identification of its owner. However, NBC News reports that police believe the bag was “clearly marked” with the bank’s logo and contained “numerous documents” proving that its contents belonged to the city of Trumbull.

On August 25, Withington was charged with misappropriation. According to “Hearst Connecticut Media”, he faces up to five years in prison and a fine of… five thousand dollars.
