The XB -1 civil aircraft company Boom Supersonic broke the sound barrier during test flights, “Washington Post” said on Wednesday. According to the journal, this is the next step in this company's efforts to construct a supersonic passenger aircraft.

XB-1 tests, during which the machine crossed the sound barrier, was carried out in the Mojave desert in California. As Washington Post wrote on Wednesday, this is a milestone for the company Boom Supersonic, a manufacturer of small aircraft, which hopes to make supersonic aerial travel available to everyone.

Barrier exceeded three times

The plane crossed the sound barrier three times. At the first he reached a speed of 1.122 Mach. In the next 20 minutes he managed to fly faster than the sound twice.

Tuesday's flight took place in the same airspace, in which the sound barrier in 1947 was broken for the first time. Boom Supersonic needed a special permit from the Federal Aviation Administration to be able to conduct this test.

“The overall XB-1 flight shows that the technology of supersonic passenger flights has already arrived,” wrote Blake Scholl, the head of Boom Supersonic in a statement.

Aspirations for the future

“Washington Post” reminded that over two decades have passed since Concorde – a commercial supersonic jet transported people through the Atlantic for the last time. A legendary project that was a joint undertaking Governments of Great Britain and Francehe fulfilled dreams of fast travels between Europe and America, but the high price of tickets made him be out of reach of most travelers. They were withdrawn, and the disaster in France in 2000 also contributed to this, in which 113 people were killed. These aircraft eventually stopped flying in 2003.

According to the American daily, the authorities of Boom Supersonic are convinced that they can overcome the obstacles that have grounded Concorde and make supersonic travel affordable and more ecological.

The company's overall Overture aircraft is to be designed to use sustainable aviation fuel. Overture is to be a passenger aircraft, which will transport from 64 to 80 passengers. It is to move at a speed of 1.7 waves, which is 1.7 times higher than the speed of sound. It is therefore more than more faster than a regular passenger aircraft.

In June last year, the company completed the construction of the Overture factory in Greensboro, North Carolina and announced that it would ultimately be able to produce 66 machines a year.

“WP” quoted the American air expert Bob Van der Linden, according to which Tuesday's test bodes well to Boom Supersonic. On the other hand – the expert assessed – most likely there will be challenges soon that Concorde has already faced.

“A long, long, long road between this test flight and the construction of a supersonic passenger aircraft,” said Van der Linden. – And another question about overall transport is: is there a market for it? Did they solve problems that Concorde did not deal with? This is still not certain, “he said.
