Young people are getting involved in the turnout campaign before the elections. “We don't know any other reality and we don't want to know”

– These are elections about the future – says Weronika Jóźwiak from the “Girls for Politics” campaign. – We want and we should want to decide what kind of world we will live in. And we should want to organize it, says Jessica Koczwara from the “Girls for Elections” Association.

– The voices of Eurosceptics are getting louder and louder and the high turnout, I think, will nicely show that the issue of European integration is very important for the young generation and that the concept is absolutely not exhausted – points out Piotr Langier, a student of international law at the University of Maastricht.

The European Union gave them opportunities that their parents did not have at their age. Young people study at European universities in international company. – We do not know any other reality and we do not want to know any other reality – says Langier. That is why each of them is involved in the European turnout campaign. – Who represents us here affects a lot of things and a lot of things that directly concern us – emphasizes Koczwara.

– A vote for people in fifth or sixth place, for women who are often not “firsts”, this vote will have exactly the same weight and will contribute to the party's success in the same way – Jóźwiak points out.

In the European elections it is actually different. – Normally, there is competition in each district separately between parties, but there is no competition within parties between districts, and now it is the other way around – explains Professor Jarosław Flis, a political scientist from the Jagiellonian University.

We elect 53 MEPs in 13 districts, but from the point of view of the division of seats, Poland is one large constituency. Let's assume that a party receives 30 percent of support nationwide: this will give it 16 seats. – In approximately each of these districts, such a party will receive one mandate, while the remaining three seats will be allocated depending on the number of votes won – explains Flis.

For parties running in the elections, this means that they must conduct a coordinated nationwide election campaign. That's why there are so many famous names on the lists. – Whether our party will get a mandate in a given district depends not only on us, but also on how our party fares on the other side of the country – says Flis.

The key is simply who is declared the winner on election night. – We want Law and Justice to win these elections in Poland, across the country, says Anna Fotyga, Law and Justice's candidate in the European Parliament elections. When presenting candidates, Law and Justice assures that it does not want Polexit, but at the same time it is strongly against the EU itself and threatens with the loss of sovereignty.

– The European Union as an institution, as an organization, has become a zone of prohibitions and orders, and this must end, says Jarosław Sellin, candidate of Law and Justice in the elections to the European Parliament.

The Civic Coalition criticizes Law and Justice for this rhetoric, accusing the former ruling party, which, like Mateusz Morawiecki, fraternizes with Eurosceptics, of wanting to weaken the European Union. – The process of disintegration of the European Union is progressing – comments Michał Wawrykiewicz, candidate of the Civic Coalition in the elections to the European Parliament.

That is why it is so important for the Civic Coalition to strengthen the unity of the Union in the face of war and the threat from Russia. – The determination of Euroenthusiasts. The determination of people who want a common, safe Europe is extremely important, emphasizes Wawrykiewicz.

The left returns to the topic of abortion and the dispute in the government coalition. – We are still at a standstill when it comes to women's rights. For us, for the Left, this issue is really important and crucial. In politics, you need to have courage, says Joanna Scheuring-Wielgus, deputy minister of culture and national heritage, candidate of the Left in the elections to the European Parliament.

– Polish women still have fewer rights than Belgian, French or Dutch women. That is why the European Left proposes a European Charter of Women's Rights, announces Robert Biedroń, the Left's candidate in the European Parliament elections.

There are five weeks left for the campaign, including the pro-turnout campaign – the elections will be held on June 9. The determination of young voters determines what the EU will be like after the elections.
