Alps, Austria. A tourist was killed in an avalanche in the Otztal valley

The avalanche occurred on Friday before 2 p.m. in the area of ​​the Ober-Hochgurgl ski resort. Freeriders, as lovers of extreme downhill skiing and boarding off-piste, are called in the open ski area in the direction of Koenigstal. As the portal of the daily “Kronen Zeitung” writes, “it is known that they wanted to make recordings or photos while jumping from the rocks”.

The victim is a young man. His companion managed to reach him quickly and immediately began resuscitation. Mountain rescuers and a doctor who continued resuscitation arrived at the scene of the accident by helicopter.

The man died while being transported to the hospital. His identity is still unknown. All we know is that he was a tourist.

The avalanche also happened on Friday around 10:00 p.m. 11 in the municipality of Fieberbrunn, also in Tyrol. In the place where the avalanche came down, there were two Austrians aged 23 and 29 and two Germans aged 15 and 60. The 15-year-old was swept away by the snow, but was not completely buried. The other men helped him, and the boy was taken to a clinic in Innsbruck with serious injuries.

According to the Tyrolean avalanche warning services, there was a 4th (on a 5-point increasing scale) degree of danger on Friday. “Fresh snow and drifts can easily be released by even a single winter sports enthusiast,” warned the services. The warning applies mainly to off-piste sports.

For Saturday, meteorologists predict wind gusts up to 100 kilometers per hour, which will bring even more snow and increase the risk of avalanches. Significant amounts of snow have fallen in many mountain regions since Thursday, with the most in Lower and Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria and Tyrol.
