The body of a 26-year-old CEO of a technology company was found on the roof of a building in Baltimore. Investigators found that the woman was hit on the head with a blunt instrument and strangled. A 30-year-old man was arrested in connection with the case. The police suspect that he attempted another murder a few days earlier.
The body of the woman, identified as 26-year-old Pava LaPere, was found on September 25 on the roof of the apartment building where her apartment was located. Court documents obtained by CNN show that the death occurred three days earlier. A court doctor quoted by the portal said that the 26-year-old died as a result of suffocation and a head injury caused by being hit with a blunt instrument.
The court documents also stated that there was a brick nearby, which the perpetrator probably used to hit the woman, and a pair of shoes, probably belonging to the victim.
According to CNN, on September 27, 30-year-old Jason Dean Billingsley was arrested in connection with the incident. The portal emphasizes that the police had an arrest warrant for this man even before LaPere’s body was found on the roof of the apartment building. Billingsley was wanted in connection with rape, arson and attempted murder, which he allegedly committed on September 19, approximately one and a half kilometers from the 26-year-old’s apartment building. CNN explains that the man arrested had previously served a sentence for a sex crime, but was released from prison this year.
Baltimore. Recordings from before the murder
CNN explains that police have no information that LaPere had any relationship with Billingsley. The portal, citing investigators’ findings, reports that there is a recording showing her approaching the apartment building where she lived and worked, and the 30-year-old following her.
In another recording described by CNN, this time from a camera in the building’s lobby, Billingsley stands at the front door and appears to be having trouble opening it. LaPere notices this and lets him inside. They talk to each other for a while. Later, the woman walks towards the elevator, followed by Billingsley in the same direction. After 40 minutes, the 30-year-old leaves the building. Court documents quoted by the portal show that one of the cameras captured a man who “came out and wiped his hands on his shorts.”
As CNN explains, LaPere, despite her young age, worked as the CEO of a technology company that she co-founded. The company, then a startup, appeared on the market when the woman was 21 years old and still studying at Johns Hopkins University. LaPere’s professional achievements earned her a place on this year’s “30 Under 30” list, a list in which Forbes magazine recognizes people who are important to business under 30.
