The Maritime Office in Gdynia reminds you about the rules of safe crossing. As Kierzkowska explained, in accordance with port regulations, the desire to go through the lock must be reported 2 hours in advance to the Duty Service of the Nowy Åšwiat Harbor Master’s Office on VHF channel 68 or by phone at 58 347 39 72.

Then, on the approach to the port heads, both from the side of the Gulf of Gdańsk and the Vistula Lagoon, you should report on VHF channel 68 (not by phone) to obtain current instructions from the Duty Service regarding the locking itself. Therefore, it is required to have a VHF radio with channel 68 on each unit, added the spokeswoman.

Kierzkowska explained that for jet skis or kayaks, it is required to obtain a one-time consent of the Harbor Master to enter the port and lock it, which will specify the conditions that the unit must meet. You must apply for such consent in advance by sending a request to the following address: kpns@umgdy.gov.pl.

Work in progress

Works on the Vistula Spit started in October 2019. In September 2022, the shipping canal through the Vistula Spit was opened, after the completion of the first stage of the project “Construction of a waterway connecting the Vistula Lagoon with the Gulf of GdaÅ„sk”.

The second stage of the investment includes the reconstruction of the existing fairway, approximately 10.4 km long, on the ElblÄ…g River in terms of bank support, which will eventually take over the functions of earth flood embankments, construction of low harbors facilitating access to the river and construction of a swing bridge over the ElblÄ…g River in Nowakowo along with changes to the road system. Work on the second stage began in April 2021. The swing bridge is due to open in the coming days.

As part of the third stage, the construction of a fairway on the Vistula Lagoon is being carried out, over a length of approximately 8.2 km.

The total length of the planned waterway is almost 23 km. After completion of all works, the shipping canal will allow vessels with a draft of up to 4.5 meters, a length of up to 100 meters and a width of up to 20 meters to flow from the Gulf of Gdańsk to the Vistula Lagoon. The cost of the investment was estimated at PLN 2 billion.
