David Loesche, a 31-year-old student of organic farming at the University of Kassel, decided to raise public awareness about the amount of waste generated every day. For this purpose, he has been wearing all the garbage he has produced during this time for more than five weeks. “My goal is to show that garbage is a really inconvenient problem,” he explains.
Living in Kassel in the middle Germany David Loesche successively collects all the garbage he generates and places it in a specially prepared installation that he wears every day. Since the beginning of the action, he has already collected 15 kilograms of waste worn on himself. It’s an ever-growing structure. Recently, I added a back to it, because the bags in the front were not enough – he explains in an interview with a reporter of the German TV RTL.

The systematically growing amount of garbage worn on the body quickly limits the daily functioning of the 31-year-old. “I think this is the last week I’m able to function on my own,” he said on January 13. He had been having problems for some time. climbing stairs, he also starts to need help getting dressed.
The student’s action is to draw attention to the problem of generating excessive amounts of waste. David Loesche emphasizes that in his opinion, reducing the amount of garbage that ends up in landfills every day can only be successful with the involvement of individuals. – My goal is to show that garbage is a really inconvenient problem. Normally, however, we do not feel them on our body – he points out.
– If we want to get to the heart of the matter, we have to ask ourselves: why do we use so much (disposable – ed.) packaging? – explains the student of organic farming. He adds that, in his opinion, there are currently insufficient incentives for companies that would encourage them to look for alternative solutions to disposable packaging faster or to offer them. According to Leosche, this requires individual action. The student points out, however, that his goal is not to moralize others, but only to attract their attention.

How much garbage do we generate every day?
According to the German Federal Statistical Office, there were 483 kilograms of waste produced per capita in 2021. The problem that David Loesche wants to draw attention to, however, concerns not only Germany. According to the Central Statistical Office, in 2021, a static Pole produced an average of 358 kilograms of garbage. Throughout the country, 13.7 million tons of municipal waste were collected, of which as much as 85.8 percent was collected from households. A year earlier, these values were respectively 342 kilograms per capita and 13.1 million tonnes in total.
