Golden Globes 2023. Austin Butler with the role of “Elvis” and HBO Max series with statuettes

Ceremony Hollywood Foreign Press Association Awards took place on the night from Tuesday to Wednesday Polish time in Los Angeles. It was the jubilee, 80th edition of the Golden Globes. During the gala, references were made to the crisis that has been following the association for more than two years. The ethnic and social structure of the organization, considered by many to be inappropriate, was discussed by, among others, host of the evening Jerrod Carmichael.

The highlight of the evening, however, was the award ceremony. Austin Butler, who played the main role of Elvis Presley in last year’s HBO hit, won the best actor in a drama film category. “Elvis” opened in cinemas in June, and since then the 31-year-old has been receiving great reviews for his portrayal of the legendary musician. Recognition won not only his acting game, but also how he recreated the songs and voice of the king of rock’n’roll.

After Butler’s speech at the gala, a lot of comments appeared on the network emphasizing that he still sounds like Elvis Presley. “If there’s an actor who has to speak with the voice of Elvis forever, I’m happy it’s Austin Butler and not Tom Hanks,” Canadian actor Kyle Buchanan tweeted. Sam Butler, in an interview he gave on the red carpet, assured that he does it unknowingly and currently it is difficult for him to distinguish when he uses his own voice and when he uses the voice from the movie.

The film itself also received good reviews. Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis”, available on HBO Max, shows the career development of one of the most popular singers in the history of music and the influence of his manager, played by Tom Hanks, Colonel Tom Parker.

HBO’s productions dominated the series categories at the Golden Globes. The winner in the category of the best miniseries, anthology or television film was “Biały Lotos”. The star of this series, Jennifer Cooligde, received the statuette for the best supporting role in a production in this category. In turn, the best drama series of the past year was named “The House of the Dragon”. Zendaya was named Best Actress in a Drama Series for her performance in “Euphoria”also available on HBO Max.

“Dragon Line” (produced by Warner Bros. for HBO) is based on George RR Martin’s book “Fire and Blood”, which tells the story of House Targaryen and the events taking place 200 years before the time in which “Game of Thrones” is set. Starring: Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy and Steve Toussaint. The screenplay was written by Ryan Condal, the function of director was entrusted to Miguel Sapochnik. It was one of the most anticipated series of last year, after the premiere of the production received great ratings on film portals.

Second season “White Lotus”, which premiered in 2022, is dedicated to the story of a group of hotel guests spending their holidays in an exclusive resort in Sicily. Mike White’s cast includes: Murray Bartlett, Connie Britton, Jennifer Coolidge and Alexandra Daddario.

On Wednesday morning, Barbara Kosecka, one of the foreign jurors of the Golden Globes, was a guest of the TVN24 program “You Get Up and Know”. – In my opinion, there are no major surprises among the winners – said Kosecka. – I was more surprised by some of the nominations. I was hoping that since the jury was expanded to include critics from around the world, more films from outside America and Hollywood. However, this did not happen, only English-language films were nominated in the categories of best drama or best comedy – she added.
