Shipwreck Bay, the showcase of the Greek island of Zakynthos, will remain closed this year. The decision made by the local authorities is related to the significant risk of landslides, although the technical condition of the ship located there is also a concern.

Navajo Beach, also known as Shipwreck Bay, will remain closed to tourists for the second summer in a row, the Greek Reporter website writes on Thursday.

Closing the beach was recommended by a group of experts who visited the site as part of a regular safety inspection. According to them, there is a significant risk of landslides due to erosion of the surrounding cliffs. The condition of the wreck on the beach, which has been damaged, is also of concern. The wreck of the Panagiotis ship has been on the beach since 1980, when it ran aground.

Access to the beach, considered by some to be the best in the world, had previously been restricted to residents and tourists. In September 2022, the beach was closed when rocks fell from the local cliffs into the bay as a result of an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4.

In 2018, seven people were injured in Navajo due to a landslide. The beach was then closed to tourists until April 2019. As Greek Reporter emphasizes, the security situation on site is to be assessed twice a year.
