May Day 2024 – how will Poles spend the long weekend? This is how much we will spend on recreation in the country – data from the Polish Tourist Organization

This year, 43% of people declared a trip for the May weekend (May 1-5). Poles, i.e. by 10 percent. more than last year – according to a study by the Polish Tourist Organization. The most popular will be short trips around the country, usually to the mountains. How will we spend this year's May weekend and how much will we spend on it?

Every fourth respondent is planning a May weekend in the country this year, while abroad – every twelfth. 12 percent respondents have not yet made a final decision regarding the direction of departure. They declare that they plan to leave, but they don't know where yet.

Directions for the May weekend

The most popular destination for domestic trips are the mountains, which are chosen by 34%. leaving. About 20% of people plan to go to cities, the seaside or other places. among those who will spend the May weekend on a domestic trip. Almost 60 percent those planning a domestic trip intend to use paid accommodation, while 32 percent will stay with family or friends, in their own holiday home, apartment, plot of land, or other free accommodation.

When choosing a place to stay, vacationers were mainly guided by the cost of their stay (47%), comfort and aesthetics, or the proximity of wild nature (31% each). According to POT, “most respondents plan to travel for 4 to 7 days (39%), while shorter trips (2-3 days) are planned by 28% of those traveling within the country.”

“Microexpeditions” is the hit of this year's May weekend

Almost half of Poles do not intend to organize a trip with an overnight stay outside their place of residence, while every third of them declares short one-day trips around the area. The remaining respondents intend to stay at home.

“The most frequently given reasons for this situation are finances (indicated by 32 percent of respondents who will spend the May weekend at home), “other commitments and responsibilities” (26 percent) and the lack of need to travel (the answers are “I don't feel the need, I don't feel like it”). “necessary trip” was granted by every fifth person not planning a trip) – calculates the Polish Tourist Organization.

The president of the Polish Tourist Organization, RafaÅ‚ Szmytke, pointed out that “this year, as many as 10 percentage points more Poles than last year will travel outside their place of residence between May 1-5, and a large part of them intend to organize micro-trips around the area.”

How much will Poles spend on the May weekend?

This year, the total costs of a May Day trip per person vary greatly. According to POT data, we intend to spend per person traveling around the country:

  • below PLN 500 – 12 percent respondents,
  • from PLN 500 to PLN 1,000 – 22 percent,
  • from PLN 1,001 to PLN 1,500 – 16 percent,
  • from PLN 1,501 to PLN 2,000 – 14 percent

In the case of trips abroad, Poles intend to spend more than during domestic trips. “Several percent of respondents want amounts ranging from PLN 1,000 to PLN 4,000 (PLN 1,001-1,500, PLN 1,501-2,000, …, over PLN 4,000),” the authors of the report calculate.

The survey was carried out on behalf of the Polish Tourist Organization by ARC Rynek i Opinia using the CAWI method on representative samples of 1,000 people and 1,000 people who are planning to go on a May holiday this year.
