Medyka, Budomierz. Attempts to smuggle hazardous waste

Two attempts to smuggle hazardous waste were thwarted by customs officers from Medyka and Budomierz (Podkarpackie Province). In total, 180 kilograms of used and powdered car catalysts were seized.

Podkarpacka informed on Tuesday about thwarted smuggling of waste National Revenue Administration. KAS spokeswoman in Rzeszów, Edyta Chabowska, said that the first smuggling was revealed during the vehicle inspection.

– Officers of the Customs and Tax Service found the goods hidden in the wheel arches of the vehicle. It turned out that 24 bags hidden from inspection contained 124 kilograms of powdered car catalyst inserts, she added.

Smuggling in Medyka

On the other hand, at the crossing in Medyka, used catalysts, weighing a total of over 55 kg, officers of the Customs and Tax Service came across a truck entering Poland during the inspection.

According to the spokeswoman, 27 catalysts were in two consignments transported across the border. Further proceedings are conducted by the Podkarpackie Customs and Tax Office in Przemyśl.

Chabowska noted that in both cases, the officers were helped by X-ray scanners in detecting the smuggling of waste.

The spokeswoman reminded that the legal transport of waste requires meeting certain requirements, including: possession of a notification document and a decision of the Chief Inspector of Environmental Protection authorizing their import.

Illegal transport of waste is punishable by a fine, restriction of liberty or imprisonment for up to two years.

In 2022, officers of the Podkarpackie Customs and Tax Office in Przemyśl prevented the illegal transport of over 26 tons of waste across the border, including scrap metal, used and powdered car catalysts.
