Northern lights in Poland. Thanks to a strong geomagnetic storm on Thursday evening, some regions of the country could admire a phenomenon typical of the North Pole.
On Thursday, a very strong one appeared over our planet storm geomagnetic. Its consequences occurred after sunset. In the north there were perfect conditions to admire northern lights. Karol Wójcicki, popularizer of astronomy from the website “With Head in the Stars”, called them outstanding.
An unusual phenomenon has already been observed, among others, in Trzebieszewo near Kamień Pomorski (West Pomeranian Voivodeship). Aleksandra Mielniczuk managed to capture the northern lights.
Weather conditions for admiring the aurora in many regions of the country promise to be … different. Variable cloudiness is forecast for the night. At times in the northern and western regions it may become more cloudy and rainy.

Northern lights – what is it and how is it formed?
The aurora borealis is formed in the upper layers of the Earth’s atmosphere and is a phenomenon characteristic mainly of the polar regions. It can take many different forms: colorful arcs, streaks, bands. Auroras are also generally green, blue-green with patches of pink or red, there are also blue-white, yellow-green or purple colors.
Their formation is associated with the flow of current in the ionosphere, at an altitude of about 100 kilometers above the Earth. During solar flares, the Sun emits protons and electrons. These particles are mostly deflected by the Earth’s magnetic field. They are caught by the Earth’s magnetosphere and move along the helix path along the magnetic field lines connecting the two Earth’s magnetic poles. As a consequence, there is an excitation of atoms in the polar region, which results in the appearance of luminous glows in the sky.
