We estimate that no less than 15 million taxpayers will receive a tax refund this year, said Finance Minister Magdalena Rzeczkowska. – The ministry’s calculations show, based on the PITs generated in the Twoj e-PIT service, that this year will be a record one, both in terms of the number of returns and their amount – added Arkadiusz Jedynak, director at the Ministry of Finance.

– We estimate that this year no less than 15 million taxpayers will receive a tax refund – people who do not run a business. The tax administration will reimburse them over PLN 17.5 billion in total, said Finance Minister Magdalena Rzeczkowska during a press conference. She noted that last year the amount of refunds amounted to PLN 10.5 billion.

Rzeczkowska emphasized that when submitting an e-PIT tax refund can be obtained “very quickly, even within 10 days”. – So far – and a full month of settlements has not yet passed – we have given over PLN 2 billion to Poles.

How many taxpayers will receive a refund?

Arkadiusz Jedynak from the Ministry of Finance said that “nearly 6 million taxpayers have settled their accounts so far. – Most (…) use the Twoj e-PIT service, paper forms currently account for less than 7 percent of all submitted declarations – he said.

He noted that the ministry’s calculations, based on the PITs generated in the Twoj e-PIT service, i.e. on the basis of PIT-11, show that this year will be record-breaking, both in terms of the number of returns and their amount. – At the moment, we have already managed to refund over PLN 2 billion during the first two weeks of the PIT action, and this refund has been received by over 2 million taxpayers – said the representative of the Ministry of Finance.

Novelties in PIT for 2022

He explained that this year’s settlements include “technical” novelties, such as increasing the amount of tax for public benefit organizations from 1 percent. up to 1.5 percent, and new ones tax credits. – We have changed the method of declaring this 1.5 percent for people who settle their accounts through pension and disability pension companies. So far, we have required them to submit a statement in the form of PIT – OP every year. From this year, it is enough to indicate this organization once and it is valid until the taxpayer changes or cancels his declaration – he said. He reminded that this applies to people who do not submit annual PITs for themselves. – On the other hand, when it comes to typically tax issues, we have a lot of relief. We have a new relief for families with at least four children, we have a relief for working seniors, we have a relief for the purchase and renovation of monuments, we have a thermomodernisation relief, so this catalog of reliefs is quite wide – he said. – It is by far the most popular relief relief for children. On the other hand, the thermo-modernization relief comes in second place – he added.

Settlement without relief for the middle class

According to Arkadiusz Jedynak, using the Your e-PIT service means that there are no problems with settlement, and each declaration is converted in terms of relief for the middle class. – Each taxpayer settles accounts on the basis of the current legal status, i.e. without relief for the middle class. Each such declaration is recalculated by us in terms of whether the relief for the middle class with the settlement submitted by the taxpayer would not be more favorable. If there is a situation where the relief would be more favorable, the taxpayer will receive a notification from us that he has an overpayment resulting from the tax return and this amount will be refunded, he explained. However, such a procedure does not apply to all employees, but only to persons for whom the application of such a relief would be more beneficial. – So far, we have converted 4 million tax returns and only in the case of 100,000 people there was a situation where the relief would be more favorable for them. The refund amounts vary from PLN 0.4 to PLN 500, he said.

Tax refund

When asked about the deadlines for the refund of the overpayment, he explained that the tax authorities have 3 months to return it. If the declaration was completed electronically, the return will be made within 45 days. – Most returns are processed within 10 – 14 days. The taxpayer has the right to pay the tax until April 30. However, due to the fact that it is a day off from work, this deadline is extended to the next working day, i.e. May 2, we should make the transfer – he explained. If the taxpayer does not run a business and does not submit a tax return himself, the declaration pending in the Your e-PIT service will be automatically accepted and submitted to the tax office as valid. – And if we run a business, it is an offense not to file such a declaration. Failure to pay the tax on time is associated with the payment of interest – summed up Jedynak.
