On Sunday before noon, on the route leading to Śnieżka, a tourist from the Czech Republic fell into the so-called Death Trough. The Mountain Volunteer Rescue Service rushed to her aid, and a helicopter picked up the victim and rescuers from the slope.

The event took place before 11 am. The details of the event were provided to us by the head of the Karkonosze GOPR group, Piotr Zamorski.

– A woman who was probably on a running training – she was dressed in sports – entered the Jubilee Road, i.e. a closed trail. In winter there is always a lot of blown snow, and most often there is ice under it. The conditions are dangerous, as the injured tourist from the Czech Republic found out – says Zamorski.

A difficult action near Śnieżka

The woman slipped about 500 meters towards the Łomniczka Cirque, the so-called Chute of Death, sustaining multiple trauma. A total of 11 GOPR rescuers from Karpacz and Jelenia Góra and five from the Czech HZS set off to help. The weather conditions were good, therefore a helicopter of the Polish Medical Air Rescue from Wrocław was dispatched.

– It was a difficult operation, in difficult terrain. In bad weather it would be even more difficult as our rescuers would have to use rope techniques to evacuate the victim. Fortunately, after thermal and medical protection, the conditions made it possible to take the woman together with the rescuers and evacuate them to the area of the Silesian House – reports Zamorski.
