Saturday brought storms accompanied by strong winds. In Silesia, the train did not have time to brake and ran into a tree lying on the catenary. Windows were broken. No one was injured. In MaƂopolska, trees fell on buildings and cars. The effects of the storms were also felt in the Opole region. Firefighters intervened several hundred times on Saturday.

The Katowice – RacibĂłrz train with 105 passengers inside did not have time to stop before a tree fell on the overhead line during a storm. Koleje ƚląskie reported that the front and side windows were broken. After a few hours, the train arrived at the nearest station.

The incident happened at approx. 15.15 on a forest, difficult to access section of the route. A network vehicle arrived on site and felled the tree.

“There were 105 passengers in the vehicle at the time, no one was injured (…) Thanks to maintaining the voltage, the train reached the Katowice Ligota station at a speed of 5 kilometers per hour, where the ordered replacement bus vehicles were waiting for the passengers,” Koleje ƚląskie announced in a press release.

The entire operation lasted over three hours, and in the meantime, over the province. A strong storm was passing through Silesia.

Provincial Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Katowice until 20 recorded a total of 435 reports related to strong winds – the highest number in the district. Cieszyn (54), Bielsko and Bielsko-BiaƂa (40), Katowice and the poviat. Gliwice (29) and Pszczyna (25).

In Ruda ƚląska, strong winds damaged the stage set up in the market square, as a result of which concerts related to the city's Easter fair were canceled. In Gliwice, a parcel locker fell over on one of the streets.

As Junior Captain Master Hubert CiepƂy, press spokesman for the MaƂopolska Provincial Commander of the State Fire Service, said in the evening, firefighters in the entire MaƂopolska Voivodeship received almost 400 reports of the effects of strong winds. They mainly concerned broken trees and branches lying on cars, roads and power lines. – Mostly in the Krakow district – added the spokesman in an interview with tvnmeteo.pl.

The most serious incident occurred in the Wieliczka poviat, in the town of ZabƂocie. There, the roof of a single-family residential building was torn off.

Effects of strong wind in Krakow

IMWM warns against dangerous phenomena. Alerts for strong winds, which may be accompanied by storms, are to remain in force until 8-9 p.m.

There are also warnings against frost and snowfall.
