Vienna is currently the best city to live in, according to a new report by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) for 2023. The next places on the podium were taken by Copenhagen and Melbourne. According to the authors of the ranking, the average standard of living in all cities of the world has improved compared to last year.
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has once again checked which cities in the world are the best to live in. Each year, it evaluates them in terms of, among others: healthcare, crime rates, political stability, infrastructure, access to culture, entertainment and green spaces.
This year, 173 cities were analysed. As in the previous yearcapital was the winner Austria, Vienna. In 2023, according to the authors of the report, the city owes its place to “an unparalleled combination of stability, good infrastructure, strong education and healthcare services, and plenty of culture and entertainment.”

The best cities to live in 2023
The report shows that the average quality of life in the world’s cities has improved to 76.2 out of 100, up from 73.2 last year. Health indicators improved the most, and education, culture and entertainment, and infrastructure improved slightly less. “The end of restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic has had a positive impact on global living conditions in 2023. Education has improved as children have returned to school, while the burden on hospitals and healthcare systems has decreased (…)” – Upasana said in a statement Dutt, head of the EIU.

As the authors of the ranking note, while the results of cities in Asia and the Middle East are improving, it is European cities that have recorded the largest declines this year. The position of Edinburgh (down 23 places, falling to 58th position) and Stockholm (down 22 places, falling to 43rd position) deteriorated the most. “These cities did not experience particularly sharp declines in performance, but they failed to achieve the improvement that many other cities, especially in Asia, achieved last year, so they were overtaken,” it underlined.
According to the authors of the report, life in Europe was also greatly influenced by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “War in Ukraine and the resulting economic and political disruptions affect the comfort of living in many European cities. due to “civil unrest, terrorism and conflict”.
