The inhabitants of the Goleniów commune are protesting against the plans to build a medical and veterinary waste disposal plant because they are afraid for their health and the environment. The plot on which the plant would be built belongs to the Szczecin-Goleniów Airport.

The inhabitants of the Goleniów commune are protesting against the planned construction of the Waste Thermal Treatment Plant, i.e. a waste incineration plant. Medical, toxic and chemical waste – dangerous to animals and humans – will also be disposed of in the incineration plant. Residents have concerns about waste that will be stored and then processed. What will be released into the atmosphere as a result?

Maciej Dziadosz, president of the management board of the Szczecin-Goleniów Airport, assured the concerned residents that the company did not sell or lease the land. – At the moment, we have said that if the investor obtains all the required consents and permits, we will consider the possibility of selling the land to him – he noted.

Annually, the incineration plant could process up to 20,000 tons of waste in two technological lines. As we read in the environmental impact report, each would be equipped with a “very advanced” exhaust gas control and treatment system, compliant with the latest emission standards and the best available technologies. The combustion process will mainly emit carbon dioxide and water vapour.

The plot on which the incineration plant would be built belongs to the Szczecin-Goleniów airport. The airport itself is unprofitable and is looking for other financing options, in this case from the sale of a plot of land. Whether the incinerator will be built or not is the decision of the commune. Residents have time to submit comments and applications to the environmental decision until August 7.
