Those suspected of attacking a Russian oppositionist are to be transferred from Poland to Lithuania

The BNS agency, citing the spokeswoman of the Lithuanian prosecutor's office, Gintara Vitkauskaite-Satkauskiene, reported on Thursday that two men detained in Poland and suspected attacking a Russian oppositionist in Vilnius on March 12 Leonid Volkov is to be transported to Lithuania by mid-May.

As Vitkauskaite-Satkauskiene added, the process of transferring suspects is being prepared by the Lithuanian Criminal Police Bureau.

The prosecutor's office did not answer BNS's question whether Lithuania is also seeking the extradition of a Belarusian citizen detained in Poland who – as Prime Minister Donald Tusk informed – he is suspected of ordering the attack on Wołków.

On April 19, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda was the first to announce the detention in Poland on April 3 of two Polish citizens suspected of attacking a Russian oppositionist. The court agreed to arrest the suspects and extradite them to Lithuania, provided that if they are convicted, they will serve a prison sentence in Poland.

Volkov is the former chief of staff of Alexei Navalny, the leader of the Russian opposition, who died in February this year. in a penal colony above the Arctic Circle. Wołkov was attacked in Vilnius, where he lives. The attacker smashed the window of the oppositionist's car, sprayed tear gas into his eyes, and then started hitting him with a hammer.

According to earlier reports by the Lithuanian authorities, the attack on the oppositionist was probably organized by the Kremlin's special services through a recruited person.
