Presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak and secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov in the afternoon passed intelligence information according to which the dam on the Dnieper in Nova Kakhivka was blown up by the Russian 205th motorized rifle brigade. According to the commander of the United Forces of the Ukrainian army, the Russians also tried to damage other objects.

Authorities Ukraine reported on Tuesday morning that the Russian occupiers blew up the dam in Nowa Kachówka, which forms the Kachowski Reservoir stretching for 240 kilometers. The hydroelectric power plant located on the dam was completely destroyed. The water level in the tank drops quickly.

Ukrainian authorities: the dam was under the complete control of the Russian occupiers

On that day, on Ukrainian television, Mykhailo Podolak, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky, and Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC), spoke about the damaged dam, saying that they can confirm their intelligence that the dam was blown up by the Russian 205th motorized rifle brigade .

The head of the NSDC called “complete nonsense” according to Russian propaganda reports that the dam was destroyed by Ukrainian troops.

– [Najeźdźcy – przyp. red.] they choke with anger because they are unable to achieve anything by military means. That’s why they make up all sorts of nonsense that has no basis in reality. After all, this dam has been under the complete control of the Russian occupiers and terrorists since March 2022. Not one of our soldiers or any of our representatives were there,” Danilov recalled, quoted by the Ukrainska Pravda portal.

– We knew the explosives had been placed [na zaporze – przyp. red.] in August-September last year. Right now [Rosjanie – red.] decided to use them to prevent our counter-offensive. A counter-offensive that, for understandable reasons, the whole world is talking about today, said the secretary of the NSDC.

Soldiers of the 205th brigade have been stationed at the hydroelectric power plant in Nowa Kachówka for a long time. It is a formation known for its participation in the First Chechen War in 1994-96, and its motto has become the cry: “205th brigade, we will return even from hell.” Currently, this brigade is composed mainly of reservists from various corners Russia – we read in the analysis of Ukrainska Pravda.

Commander: The Russians also tried to damage other dams on the Dnieper, but we stopped them

The commander of the United Forces of the Ukrainian army, General Serhiy Nayev, pointed out on Tuesday that the damaged hydroelectric dam is not the only such facility on the Dnieper that the Russians tried to damage. Nayev revealed that “the enemy was planning similar actions on other dams as well”, but – as he emphasized – “we stopped his intentions”.

“We analyze all threats that may occur in the future and take appropriate actions in advance to reduce the possibility to zero [dokonania – red.] such hostile acts,” said General Nayev.

The military assured that key hydropower facilities under the control of the authorities in Kiev, such as the Kiev Hydroelectric Power Plant in Vyshgorod, are well protected against potential attacks by Russian forces.

“We have taken appropriate security measures: both to protect against air fire and to prevent hostile sabotage and reconnaissance operations. These procedures have been fully implemented and are now in force,” the commander said.
