Ronna McDaniel retained her position as chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC). Supported by former US President Donald Trump, she will work for him during the election campaign for the US presidential election in 2024.

McDaniel defeated her challenger Harmeet Dhillon by a vote of 111 to 51 at a party meeting in Dana Point, California, and will serve as president for two years.

Dhillon’s supporters expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s leadership, saying that the recent disappointing election results meant a change was needed in the way the National Committee was run.

During her first three terms as president, McDaniel was responsible for overseeing the 2020 presidential election as well as the November 2022 congressional election.

“It’s critical to our chances in 2024 that those who supported my campaign rally around our party and its candidates,” Dhillon said in a statement.

Dhillon’s supporters, who spoke to Reuters, said their vote to oust McDaniel was a vote against Trump and an expression of dissatisfaction with the party’s structure.

Trump endorsed McDaniel as RNC president in 2017 after helping her win the 2016 election in her home state of Michigan. Then Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton.

The former president announced in November that he would run for the White House again in 2024.
