A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck overnight Sunday into Monday local time near the pacific state of Vanuatu. Tremors were recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers. A tsunami warning was issued in the region.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), on the night of Sunday to Monday local time (in Poland it was before 14:00) a large earthquake with a magnitude of 7 occurred in the Vanuatu region. Its epicenter was 23 kilometers northwest of the city of Port -Orly, and the hypocenter at a depth of about 10 km.

High waves in the coastal area. A tsunami warning was in effect

Due to the strength of the quake, a tsunami warning was issued for the Vanuatu region and nearby islands. On some coasts of the country, for several minutes after the quake, waves with a height of 30 centimeters to 1 meter above the tide level were expected. But the threat has ceased.

There are no reports of injured people or damaged infrastructure.

Vanuatu is a country in the Pacific, composed of 83 islands with a population of about 300,000. people. The archipelago is located in an arc of seismic faults, earthquakes are frequent there. It also has six active volcanoes.
