The result of conversations with Prof. Jakub Lewicki, the Mazowieckie Voivodship Conservator of Monuments, is a new, better version of the project of redevelopment of Trzech Krzyży Square. In March, the Council of Warsaw provided ZDM with money for additional works related to greenery. Bids in the tender can be submitted until May 9. “The selected contractor will have 120 days to complete the works, counting from the moment of signing the contract” – announce the road builders.

“A total of 28 new trees will appear on Plac Trzech Krzyży. Of these, 4 pear trees have already been planted in its northern part, and the rest is the subject of an ongoing tender. These are 16 lindens and 8 hawthorns. These will be trees with a height of approx. 6 m and a minimum trunk circumference from 30 cm (hawthorns) to 50 cm (lindens). The work will be complemented by new lawns, hedges and clusters of perennials. It is over 2,700 square meters of green areas – all existing ones will be preserved and new ones will be created” – lists ZDM.

And it ensures that greenery will appear in place of concrete. The “heat islands” in front of the church of St. Aleksandra, on a triangular square at the intersection of Żurawia and Bracka Streets and in the area of Książęca Street. Redundant asphalt surfaces excluded from traffic will also be replaced with greenery. The new greenery will appear successively as construction works are completed and the construction site is liquidated, both stages of the investment are coordinated with each other.

“They speed up the work”

Road workers also describe the progress of the works. “After the inevitable winter slowdown (caused by the weather, but also meticulous work on reconstructing the cobblestone surface), works on both roadways of Plac Trzech Krzyży are being accelerated. At the end of March, asphalting of the eastern roadway began. that it will be done in mid-April.

They also point out that then the work will move mostly to the western carriageway. There may also be an ancient pavement there. However, thanks to the arrangements made so far with the conservator and the current supervision of archaeologists, the demolition works should go faster than the first time. On the western side, the pavement will also be inventoried, secured and then covered with asphalt, until possible reuse.

The scope of works related to the replacement of the surface covers the Trzech Krzyży Square itself and its further surroundings. Last summer, the surface on the de Gaulle roundabout was replaced. There are also plans to mill Nowy Świat between the roundabout and the square.

Redevelopment of Trzech Krzyży Square. What will change?

The greenery and renovation of the surface of the square complement a number of other changes that are already in progress. The pedestrian crossing in the central part of the square, rated low in the audit of pedestrian crossings, will gain signaling and asylum. Passengers of public transport will be able to change buses more easily thanks to the concentration of today’s scattered stops in one place: in the vicinity of the Institute of the Deaf.

The square itself, today one of the main “bicycle teleports” of the capital, will also gain a complete bicycle infrastructure. New bicycle lanes will be marked out on the roadways, which will ensure the connection of the existing infrastructure for cyclists in Aleje Ujazdowskie up to Nowy Świat, as well as bicycle routes crossing the square transversely. This arrangement will be complemented by a two-way bicycle path on the eastern side of the square from Aleje Ujazdowskie to Książęca Street.

Historic pavement

The first works on Plac Trzech Krzyży began last year. Almost from the beginning, he cast a shadow on the investment schedule historic pavement, which on a large area is located under the asphalt road. The find was not a surprise, but only after revealing the scale and technical condition of the pavement, it was possible to select a detailed plan of action together with the conservator of monuments.

Finally, it was inventoried, repaired where required, laid and… covered with asphalt. Road workers assure that in the future it will be possible to unveil it on the occasion of the “ultimate revitalization of the square”.
