In 2022, 4.48 million young people aged 15 to 29 were unemployed in the European Union, which is 6.3 percent of the total population in this age bracket. Eurostat notes that since 2009, when this indicator began to be surveyed regularly, this is the lowest reading. How does Poland compare to the rest of the European Union?
The situation among EU countries was very diverse last year. The share of young unemployed in the total population was below 4 percent the Czech Republic (2.0%) Germany and Bulgaria (3.3 percent each), as well as on Hungary and in Poland (3.5 percent each).
On the other hand, this percentage exceeded 8%. In Spain (11.2 percent), Greece (10.6%), Sweden (10.3%) and Cyprus (8.8%).

Compared to 2021, the share of unemployed youth in the total population decreased in most EU countries. The exceptions were Cyprus, Latvia (both +0.1 pp), Romania (+0.3 pp) and Estonia (+0.4 pp), where the share increased slightly.

Employment in the EU and unemployment in Poland
Recall that Eurostat recently announced general employment data for 2022. They show that last year as many as 75 percent. people aged 20-64 in the European Union, or 193.5 million, were employed, which is the highest percentage since the beginning of the survey in 2009. The employment rate fell to 72%. in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but rebounded to 73% in 2021 and then increased by 2 percentage points in 2022.
