European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders on the creation of a special, international tribunal to judge the Russian military-political leadership he said in an interview with Deutsche Welle.
– Two main options are being considered: an international tribunal based multilateral agreement or a simplified solution based on bilateral agreement between Ukraine and the Council of Europe – he said.
Tribunal to try Putin in the “final phase”
As he pointed out, the creation of the special tribunal is in its final phase“. – The next step is a matter of political will. Now it is only the beginning of the year, and this should be possible by the end of the year – he said.
In the tribunal, which will most likely be based in The Hague, criminal proceedings regarding activities in Ukraine are to be considered. According to the Ukrainian prosecutor's office, the collected materials allow for proving over 100,000 war crimes committed by Russian army on the territory of Ukraine.
Arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin. Zakharova: It doesn't matter
In March 2023 International Criminal Court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and plenipotentiary for children's rights to the President of Russia Maria Lwowa-Biełowa. The ICC accused them of “unlawful deportation and displacement of people – including children – from areas of Ukraine occupied by Russia.”
Just after the order was issued Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marija Zakharova she said it “doesn't matter at all.” “Russia is not a member of the Rome Statute of the ICC, (referred to by the institution – ed.), therefore there is no liability towards the Tribunal. Russia does not cooperate with this body, so any 'prescriptions' coming from the Tribunal will be legally invalid for us“- she noted.
