Sebastian Majtczak’s defense attorney requested the Piotrków court to issue a safe conduct letter for his client. This document is intended to allow the person suspected of causing a fatal accident on the A1 motorway to come to Poland without the threat of being arrested. A family of three died in a burning car near Piotrków Trybunalski.

Attorney Bartosz Tiutiunik said in an interview with tvn24.pl that he applied to the District Court in Piotrków Trybunalski to issue a letter of safe conduct for his client.

– We submitted the appropriate application on Wednesday morning – emphasized Sebastian Majtczak’s defense attorney.

A safe conduct is a document that guarantees that the suspect will not be placed in custody until the end of the criminal procedure. The person covered by it must always respond to every summons from the court and the prosecutor’s office, cannot leave the country without the court’s permission and cannot in any way influence the course of the investigation.

If the person covered by the safe conduct does not respect these three conditions, the safe conduct may be revoked and the suspect may be put behind bars. Letters of safe conduct are most often issued to persons who, for various reasons, cannot be forcibly brought to court (for example, when the person is in hiding or is abroad).

Statement of lawyer Sebastian Majtczak

Attorney Bartosz Tiutiunik, Sebastian Majtczak’s defense attorney, sent a statement to the media in which he confirmed that his client left the territory of Poland “after conducting procedural activities with his participation as a witness.” He noted that his departure “had no connection with the ongoing criminal proceedings” and Majtczak was not banned from leaving the country.

Tiutiunik emphasizes that Sebastian Majtczak learned about the findings of the investigation and the activities of the prosecutor’s office through press conferences at which the Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro revealed further details.

– When my client was legally abroad, one day he was charged, provisionally detained and a European arrest warrant was issued. Despite the tragedy of the situation, my client was not given a chance to take a stand at trial. I applied for a safe conduct – said in an interview with PAP Bartosz Tiutiunik, lawyer of Sebastian Majtczak, suspected of causing an accident on the A1, in which a family of three died.

– It is not the will or intention of Mr. Majtczak to evade justice – noted the lawyer.
