The current rector of the University of Warsaw, Professor Alojzy Z. Nowak, was elected to this position on Thursday for the next term of office 2024-2028, the university announced.
The rector was elected by the Electoral College of the University of Warsaw. 435 votes were cast, 432 were valid. Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak received 281 votes, while his opponents, prof. Łukasz Niesiołowski-Spano – 143 votes and prof. Maciej Górecki – eight.
Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak was elected rector of the University of Warsaw for the second time in a row.
He has been associated with the university for 40 years
According to the university, prof. Nowak has been associated with the University of Warsaw since 1984. He headed the Department of International Economic Relations and the Department of National Economy at the Faculty of Management. He was also the director of the European Center. In the years 1999–2006 he served as deputy dean of the Faculty of Management, and then as dean of this faculty (2006–2012). In the years 2012–2016 he was the Vice-Rector of the University of Warsaw for scientific research and cooperation. In 2016, he was re-elected dean of the Faculty of Management. He became Rector of the University of Warsaw in 2020.
He advised and served on supervisory boards
On Tuesday, the weekly “Polityka” reported that prof. Alojzy Nowak was still employed by PZU as an economic advisor to former president Beata Kozłowska-Chyła, although the insurer's Supervisory Board dismissed her from her position in February; he was to receive PLN 70,000 for advising. PLN per month.
On Wednesday – as “Rzeczpospolita” reported – PZU terminated the contract with the rector of the University of Warsaw. Prof. Nowak stated that he left the company himself. “To be honest, I would like to inform you that I left PZU by mutual consent of the parties. The date of conclusion of the agreement agreed between the parties had no connection with media publications. I was employed as an advisor before I became the rector. When I took up the position of rector, in a transparent procedure, I was granted permission to do so. consent of the University Council. The use of scientists by business in renowned universities in the world is still a standard issue in our country,” the rector wrote on social media.
