Cooking on a gas stove may result in asthma. These are the conclusions of the latest research by American scientists. Gas stoves emit everything that can be found in smog smoke.

Cooking with gas may be harmful to our health. Mrs. Marta Michałowska from Tarnów already knows about it. – I was not aware of this, although I assumed it was not healthy, because it is a gas that burns – admits Mrs. Marta.

Scientists from Stanford University have calculated that each year stoves – propane and natural gas – contribute to almost 20,000 deaths of American adults and cause asthma in 50,000 children – in the United States alone, which translates only in their country per billion dollars in social costs annually. Because this group of people needs to be treated.

Asthma in children may be caused by gas – specifically its combustion products. – It can damage the epithelia, which are the first barrier of our body's defense, and by releasing certain inflammatory mediators it can lead to the development of asthma – explains Professor Marek Kulus, head of the Department of Pediatric Pneumonology and Allergology at the Medical University of Warsaw.

They emit harmful substances

Regardless of what we prepare on them: soup, minced meat, or just boil water, gas stoves emit nitrogen dioxide, benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and suspended dust. That is, everything we find in smog smoke. Moreover, Professor Aleksander Szkarowski, head of the Department of Building Networks and Installations at the Koszalin University of Technology, who also studied the impact of gas stoves on the air quality in apartments, points out that exhaust gases from gas stoves are at the height of our noses.

There are more and more studies on the impact of gas stoves on the air quality in apartments, and they raise no doubts to such an extent that at the beginning of 2023, the US Office of Consumer Appliance Safety wanted to ban the sale of new gas stoves in the United States. In the end, this did not happen because many apartments are not technically prepared for the changes. Both overseas – and in Poland. In Poland, every tenth child suffers from asthma. For various reasons. For example, 3-year-old Bolek inherited asthma. – Due to the fact that both I and my husband have asthma, this accumulation of genes is not beneficial for our children, Bolek started to choke – explains Monika Sawicka, Bolek's mother. Fortunately, the Sawicki family has an electric stove.
