Alyaksandr Lukashenko appointed Sergei Maślak as Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection on Monday. At the very beginning of his new function, the Belarusian leader outlined the scope of tasks ahead of him for the new minister. He commissioned Maślak, among others: exploration of oil deposits on Belarus.

Alyaksandr Lukashenko emphasized that a meeting on further activities of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection was recently held. – I'll tell you straight: you have to dig and search. I don't think we don't have what we need in our soil. I don't believe we don't have large amounts of oil – said the self-proclaimed president Belarus.

Addressing the new minister, Lukashenko said that “if this task can be fulfilled at least to some extent, the monument will be able to be erected anywhere.” The leader of Belarus added that deposits of mineral fertilizers have been explored to a greater or lesser extent in the country, but “he does not believe that they do not have larger amounts of oil.”

Moreover, as assessed by the self-proclaimed president, Belarus is currently active in the field of oil exploration and production only one company. He noted that it works well and is run by a good specialist, but “there is no competition in this field.”

– We didn't come up with this idea – there must be competition. We need more opinions, more impressions, Lukashenko added.

BelTA reports that during a conversation with reporters, Sergei Maślyak said that Alyaksandr Lukashenko, appointing him as the new minister, “focused his attention on the issues of bringing order to the land and improving the settlements.” – The role of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection is coordinating in this direction – said Maślak. As he added, “our department is responsible for this work.”

Before his nomination as a minister Sergei Maślyak he worked as the head of administration of one of the districts in Minsk. Journalists asked him if he had any concerns about his new status and the need to perform a number of responsible tasks. He only said with a smile that “factory workers cannot be intimidated.”

A significant period of Maślak's work was associated with the Minsk Factory District, the Belarusian agency reported.
