All 363 couples who applied for funding for the in vitro fertilization procedure in 2023 in Krakow will take part in the program, the magistrate informed. The city will allocate PLN 1.8 million for this task this year. This is the second edition of the city’s subsidy program. Almost twice as many couples qualified for it than in the previous year.

This year, all 363 couples who applied for co-financing for the in vitro fertilization procedure and met the conditions set for them, qualified for the Municipal Infertility Treatment Program by In vitro Fertilization for the inhabitants of Krakow.

This is the second edition of the city program. Only 201 pairs were qualified for it last year. However, the interest was so great that some people applying for a subsidy could not send their application just a few hours after the start of the registration – the pool was exhausted on the same day and some couples could not take advantage of the city’s offer. Therefore, the local government increased the amount allocated for this task from one million in 2022 to PLN 1.8 million in 2023.

In vitro for Cracovians. Submissions can still be submitted

Although the funds for this year’s edition of the program have already been exhausted, the call for proposals is not closed. “Couples can still apply for participation in the program as part of the reserve list. As soon as there are vacancies, further couples will be able to take advantage of the co-financing” – noted the City of Krakow in a communiqué.

Each couple qualified for the program receives funding for one individualized in vitro fertilization procedure in the amount of PLN 5,000 or one embryo adoption procedure in the amount of PLN 2,500.

As the officials emphasize, the documents were checked by medical facilities, evaluating which couples met the inclusion criteria and whether there were any contraindications excluding them from the program.

The program criteria assume that the couple must live in Krakow, the woman must be between 20 and 42 years old and must meet the statutory conditions for starting in vitro fertilization therapy. The couple must also agree to self-finance the storage of the cryocells.

In early March, Krakow officials announced that the first children have already been born from last year’s co-financing program for infertility treatment by in vitro fertilization. As part of the first edition, 19 babies have been born so far. Among them – already two-month-old Leonard.

We’ve been trying for a long time, eight years. Let’s remember that the in vitro method is at the end of this battle – says Leonard’s mother, Kamila, in an interview with TVN24.

– I am very sorry (…) when politicians say offensive words about people who have used this method (in vitro – ed.), about children who were conceived in this way. A great disagreement awakens in me and that is why I want to shout about it even louder, to publicize it even more, to say how many positive features this method has. I would appeal to politicians who speak publicly about this method to (…) learn what this method is all about – emphasized Mrs. Kamila.
