India. An officer opened fire on a moving train, four people are dead

A railway security officer fired shots on a Mumbai-bound train, killing four people instantly, Indian media reported. The man was detained after trying to escape, the motives for his attack are being established.

The incident took place on Sunday morning on a passenger train traveling from Jaipur to Mumbai in the west India. As the train was near a station in the town of Palghar, about 100 kilometers from Mumbai, Chetan Kumar, a railway security officer aboard, opened fire, killing four people on the spot. He then “triggered the alarm and jumped off the train”, but was quickly apprehended by the police.

The course and circumstances of the event are not clear. According to local media, the attacker knew one of the victims named Tikaram Meena. According to various reports, it was supposed to be his colleague or supervisor from work. According to the Hindustan Times newspaper, the other fatalities were in a different car than Meena, but this information has not been confirmed.

The investigation and the process of identifying the victims is ongoing, and the perpetrator’s motives have not yet been established, a spokesman for the Western Railways on board of which the incident took place said. A representative of the carrier assured that the next of kin of the victims would receive compensation.
