US President Joe Biden has set the bar very high. He spoke openly about democracy, about a free Ukraine forever, about a North Atlantic alliance that would defend every inch of territory. In the next year or two, he will have to prove the truth of these words, said journalist and writer Anne Applebaum, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, on TVN24.
The speech in Arkady Kubicki was the culmination of the two-day visit of US President Joe Biden to Poland. – When Russia invaded, it was a test for Ukraine – emphasized the US president. As he assessed, “the whole world has been tested, America has been tested, FOR THISAll democratic countries.” He also assured that support for Ukraine “would not be shaken.” “NATO will not be divided, we will not be tired,” he declared.

Applebaum on Biden’s words
According to Applebaum, Biden’s words unite many people, but “it will take work now to make them real.” She emphasized that in the US president’s speech “there were words addressed to Poles, but there were also words addressed to Americans.”

– Some Americans think that (the US) will be on the side of Ukraine until the end, because we see in (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) Zelensky especially, but also in the whole nation, someone who defends our values. Biden used very meaningful words that resonated for Americans, familiar words – freedom, liberty – freedom. The words that are in our constitution are also in our politics – said the journalist.
In her opinion, Biden tried to combine Ukraine and the need to defend Ukraine with American values. “I think it succeeded,” she said.
He added that “of course there is a section of American society that will not accept these words.” – These are his political opponents. The far right in the US is more pro-Russian and more skeptical, not only of Ukraine, but of NATO and democratic alliances in general, she explained.
However, she indicated that “the majority supported and listened to the US president “with approval”.
