A snow avalanche descended on Thursday afternoon in the area of ​​the eastern slopes of Mały Kościelec in the Tatra Mountains, completely covering the tourist. Rescuers managed to pull the man out of the snow. According to the TOPR duty officer, his condition is serious.

The accident happened on Thursday (February 2) around 14:35 in the area of ​​the eastern slopes Little Kościeliec. According to the duty rescuer of the Tatra Volunteer Rescue Service, Tomasz Wojciechowski, the rescuers informed about the accident managed to quickly reach the place and extract the victim from under the snow after about 35 minutes, but the man’s condition is serious. He is fighting for his life.

There are very bad tourist conditions in the Tatras. The third level of avalanche danger is in force, additionally it is snowing heavily and strong winds are blowing. Due to the weather conditions, the helicopter cannot participate in the action

TOPR appeal to tourists

The TOPR duty officer appealed on Thursday (February 2) for “abandoning mountain activities above the upper limit of the forest!”. “We advise against trips by the road to the shelter at Morskie Oko and through the Roztoka valley to the valley of the Five Polish Ponds. Skiers riding on Kasprowy Wierch are asked to stay only on the prepared ski trails” – we read in a message posted on TOPR social media.
