On Wednesday, a new record was recorded for energy production from photovoltaic installations, reported Polskie Sieci Elektorenergetyczne. At the peak, 10,530 MWh of energy was produced, which was more than half of the demand at that time. This result is a challenge for the Polish transmission system, which will result in limited energy production in the near future.

Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE) announced on Thursday on the X platform that on May 8, 2024, they recorded a record production of electricity from photovoltaic (PV) installations.

“PV installations operated with a capacity of 11,057 MW at 12.30 p.m., and between 12-1 p.m. they produced 10,874 MWh of energy,” said the operator of the National Power System. At the same time, PSE emphasized in the announcement that due to the oversupply of electricity in the National Power System (NPS) and the need to restore the regulatory capabilities of the NPS, they are introducing on May 9 this year. non-market reduction in the generation of photovoltaic sources, i.e top-down limitation of energy production in the amount of: 957 MW per hour 12:01 – 13:00, 965 MW at 13:01 – 14:00.

Owners of sources whose production has been reduced are entitled to compensation. The operator takes such actions when it has exhausted other ways of balancing the NPS without reducing generation, and getting rid of its surplus, e.g. selling energy abroad, is not economically justified.

More records for photovoltaics in Poland

The electricity transmission system operator recorded record generation of photovoltaic sources in the Polish power system also on April 9 this year. – at. At 12.15 they were working with a power of 10.65 thousand. GW, and between 12 and 13 produced 10 thousand. 530 MWh of electricity, which was more than half of the demand at that time.

At the beginning of April this year. The Renewable Energy Institute reported that according to its calculations in the first quarter of this year. There were 4,870 PV installations above 50 kW in Poland, of which 262 were farms above 0.5 MW. The total installed capacity in this group (i.e. without micro-installations) reached 5.4 GW. “In 2023, there was a 41% increase in new installed capacity compared to 2022,” it was emphasized.
